Tips for your Tube journeys in London

If you’re visiting London this year, then you’ll undoubtedly be using the London Underground. In this post, we’ll be giving you some tips so that you can make the most out of your journeys in the capital – and providing you with some interesting facts you probably didn’t know.

For instance, did you know that you don’t need to wait for the barriers to close before you touch in with your oyster pad? If the person in front of you touches in fine and you a beep, you can touch in behind them without having to wait. Another interesting fact is that on the new 2015 tube map, there are now 408 stations in total. This is because the Overground and TfL rail services have been added on the map. So only 270 stations are actual tube stations. Interestingly, the abandoned ghost stations are not included on the map. Some say that there are 49 unused station on the network – with some of them being started but not completed i.e. the Bull and Bush station on the Northern line – right next to Hampstead.

What’s interesting to know is that the London Underground system was only built with a 1/5 of the current population in mind. This makes sense considering that the transport network in London is one of the oldest in the world. They didn’t factor in the population growth in the city over the coming years. As a result, trains tend to often be packed – especially during peak periods. As a result, many regular tube travellers tend to deal with many annoyances. For one, sometimes people are packed in to the point that they’re all standing right next up to each other. As a result, the hashtag #tubeproblems has become somewhat of a popular term on Twitter and other social networks.During your visit, we encourage you avoid traveling on the London Underground during peak periods.

If you’re looking for an accommodation that allows you to spend less time travelling, and more time walking consider the M by Montcalm Shoreditch London Tech City.
